I know the AMD Athlon XP 1800+ is supposed to run at 1533MHz, but the
one I got only wants to run at 1150.
My MSI motherboard (K7T Turbo) is supposed to be compatible with this
CPU (and I do have the latest BIOS). The CPU itself is marked
AX1800DMT3C and doesn't look to have been altered to my eyes. But it
boots up as an 1150MHz system (100Mhz clock and 11.5x multiplier) and
it won't tolerate having the FSB set to 133 or the multiplier being
changed. If I try, the computer won't POST.
IOW: It's behaving for all the world as if it's *meant* to run at
1150.
Have I been ripped off and sold a re-marked chip? Is there something
else I'm missing? I suspect the latter, but can't imaging what could
be going on.

There is a jumper on the board, J17 I think, that you have to set for 133.

Yep. Done it. Won't boot or POST when I do.

11.5x100=1150MHz
11.5x133.34=1533MHz

IOW's, set your FSB to 133.

I have to wonder if it's something like ram being only pc100 or the like..

Yeah, I thought of that but it *is* PC133 SDRAM.

Mark,

I am currently running a K7T Turbo and an XP2400, no problems.
I had an XP1800 that was real flaky and quickly died, and with you post am
beginnning to wonder about compatability.
Back to your issue and my thoughts here (probably all obvious)
flash to ver 3.6 bios -- meant for K7T Turbo2 --
verify that you are running PC133 mem.
leave jumper on fsb select off (133 fsb)
If you originally had bios set to 'High Performance' clear cmos and try
again.
FYI, I have also had a barton running successfully.
I know that board can do it.

Best of luck,

Garry

Check ram timings and slow them down if needed. Power supply? If your
board allows it, try something in between 100 and 133 FSB. It might be the
cpu, but more than likely not. Ram or timings cause the problems in most
cases.

Yep.

Tried it: Computer won't boot. Won't even POST.

Tried that to no avail.

OK, big leap here.
Presuming you have a known good PSU and mem and mobo, your first and obvious
step is to try the CPU in a different setup.
Alternatively, and just as obvious , is to try the individual components in
a different setup until the cream rises to the top. Either something will
show bad or some setting, cabling, misconfiguration will show up.
What was running on that mobo b4.

Best of luck,

Garry.

Thanks to all who have offered advice on this issue.
I've come to the conclusion that I've been sold a damaged CPU. Seller
hasn't even replied to my latest email. I suspect he overclocked it
beyond its limits for a bit too long or with marginal cooling. Well
that's what I get for buying from eBay. Sometimes you win one and
sometimes you lose one...
